Woodlawn Cycle Cafe

Woodlawn Cycle Cafe

Birmingham has a new coffee shop, and it melts my California-hipster-millennial heart.

Enter: Woodlawn Cycle Cafe. Thanks to Birmingham local, Jessica Furniss, I discovered the Woodlawn Cycle Cafe shortly after it had opened. The food is majorly delicious, and the interior design is on point.  It’s a quiet place for hanging out or doing work.  From what I hear the coffee is also amazing, which doesn’t surprise me because they sell MadCap Coffee.

I really loved the whole vibe of the place. The couple of times I went it seemed like everyone knew each other, which I love in a coffee shop… locally supported and a welcoming environment.

According to AL.com owner, Armand Margjeka, "Cycle Cafe is a concept that very softly revolves around Bicycle culture. It's really a destination point for cyclists, but it does not mean it's only for cyclists." He and part-owner, Kyle Campbell, are leasing the space from REV Birmingham, “an economic development organization that stimulates business growth and improves quality of life in Birmingham, Alabama’s City Center and its Neighborhood Commercial Centers,” (according to its website).  Woodlawn Cycle Cafe is located in the Woodlawn area of Birmingham, where the high-school-sports-inspirational movie, Woodlawn, also takes place. Birmingham has seen a resurgence of businesses in the past couple of years and seems to only be growing.  It’s exciting to live in Birmingham right now where small and large businesses alike are popping up everywhere.

octane coffee

Octane Coffee reminds me a bit of my life back in California.  A coffee shop with a bit of edgy, hipster attitude complimented by industrial styling.  It was love at-first-rolling-steel-shutters, reminiscent of that time I visited acclaimed architect, Barton Myers', Montecito home.  To top it off, it even has a bar, complete with bearded, hipster men (possibly hiding tattoo sleeves under their chambray shirts) serving up microbrews and speakeasy-worthy cocktails.

Octane is a little breath of fresh air amongst the college atmosphere I'm accustomed to.  Instead, you might find the reader, the creative and the occasional diligent studier.  And, ironically, I've not seen so many Asian Americans in my total time living here than I did that one time I went to Octane. So pretty much, I've found my Birmingham "Secret Headquarters of Magical Thinking" (a nod to all those who may follow me on instagram).

p.s. Their Chai Latte is fantastic… the best I've had in Birmingham so far.

slo | kreuzberg

I love coffee shops so much that on my trip to SLO, Isabell and I went to Kreuzberg Coffee Company just a few hours after going to Scout. haha.  Kreuzberg has a totally different feel from Scout.  It's eclectic and gritty and artistic.  Kreuzberg is for the rocker with tattoos, and Scout is for the person who eats gluten-free.  I loved both coffee shops, though.  Each has such great personality.  While I don't know what the coffee tasted like, I loved Kreuzberg's chai.  Their chai could be the best I've ever had.  I wish I bought one of those big jugs! slo | scout coffee

Oh how I love a good coffee shop. Anyone who knows me or might follow me on instagram knows I'm obsessed.  When I visited SLO last weekend, I was so excited to stumble upon this little gem.  Scout Coffee Co. opened up early this year on Garden Street, just down the blog from my favorite SLO coffee shop, Linnaea's Cafe.  I wish I was still going to Poly because I'd definitely spend most of my study sessions here at this gorgeous coffee shop.  My inner architect fell in love with the clean lines and bright open space.  And that kitchen sink and counter combo?! I die.  Scout is designed like the home I wish I had. I can't tell you much about their coffee as I don't drink coffee, but their strawberry rhubarb soda was perfect for the warm SLO day.

And because I loved Scout (and their logo!) so much, I snagged myself one of their coffee mugs, (which I'll use to drink tea. sorry.)

coffee shop diaries | cafe 4

The kind of lovely thing about dating a man in grad school is the abundance of study dates.  I really love working and reading in coffee shops.  It's even at the top of my list of activities to do while traveling.  So lucky me, Lance likes to read and work in coffee shops as well.  Perfect pair, no? When he came to visit we went to Cafe 4 to do some work.  It's such a great place!  It's located in the foyer of Neighborhood Church in Castro Valley.  I really love the drinks they offer as well as the variety of sitting areas.  Lance and I chose a large table to spread out all our computers and books.  Even though we spent most of the day there working, it was some good quality time.  Some of the things I miss out on having a long distance relationship is experiencing everyday life with him.  I cherish the normal activities.  Plus I love working, so it killed two birds with one stone.
