Port Au Prince, Haiti as I saw it.

.

An excerpt from a letter I wrote to friends and family before I left for Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

"Every place I travel to makes me want to travel more, and in the past 22 months since I was laid off, I've traveled more than 100,00 miles and flown on more than 40 flights. I am so thankful for the doors God opened. But when I went to an orphanage in Cambodia in December 2010, I felt God tugging at my heart. I knew He had given me the freedom to travel for a reason. I wanted to do more than just meet people--I wanted to help people. Immediately when I returned from that trip, I began to search out organizations that I could help overseas with. When the earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, I knew that's where God wanted me to be."

.

I went to the Dominican Republic and Haiti from March 27 to April 3, and it was truly an incredible experience to see the reality of such a tragic catastrophe. The state of Haiti portrayed by the media, while accurate, is only a small, small portion of what is really going on. Throughout Port Au Prince, the same sights were seen over and over.  Fallen buildings.  Rubble and garbage everywhere.  People waiting for food.  People waiting for water.

.

In my next couple of posts about my trip to Hispaniola, I hope to bring awareness of what's really going on and just how much Haiti needs help and prayers.
